Father Michael’s Musings – August 13

Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may he bring us all together to eternal life.
-Rule of St. Benedict 72:11

We come to the conclusion of Rule 72, the shining
jewel of the rule and perhaps of the Holy Rule in its entirety.

The perfect summation of the good zeal that leads to life is to prefer nothing whatever to Christ. As we grow in respect for one another, patience, obedience to one another, as we let go of judgment and the importance of our own personal views, we slowly and beautifully begin to realize the importance of simply preferring nothing whatever to Christ and his love. This matters because of the simple desire found at the conclusion, not just that we might be brought to eternal life, but that we might all be brought together to eternal life. Together.

What a powerful word, and a great reminder to us all that the reason we strive to live lives of holy zeal is that we might rejoice in the presence of God together, as a community founded on love, respect, care and joy.

Let us prefer nothing to Christ, and let us show this preference in our care for one another. Peace to you all, and have a fantastic week of joy!
